The Application Process
The Michigan City Police Civil Service Commission has the responsibility of hiring Police Officers. The application process is as follows:
- Civil Service Examination, including interviews and a written examination
- Polygraph Examination
- Background Investigation
- Agility Test – Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Standards
- Offer to Hire
- Physical Examination
- Psychological Examination
- Drug Screen
- Hiring Date Established upon Successful Completion of Listed Steps
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a US citizen.
- Must be at least 21 years of age but not yet 36 years of age when appointed.
- Must be a graduate of an accredited high school or possess a state accredited G.E.D.
- Must not have been convicted of any class of felony.
- Must hold a valid operators license.
- Must be able to pass a written and a physical agility test.

Advancement
The Michigan City Police Department has excellent opportunity for advancement. Officers can seek promotions to supervisory ranks through our merit system. The Michigan City Police Department has the following Merit Rank structure:
- 3 Captains
- 5 Lieutenants
- 11 Sergeants
- 12 Corporals

Longevity increases for every 3 years of service. Receive a 3% base pay increase up to 20 years.
