The Officer of the Month, as voted on by the Staff of the Michigan City Police Department, and recognized for outstanding duty is Officer Rob Grant, a 3 year veteran and assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division working the mid-night shift.
On August 7th, 2007 Officer Grant responded to a fire at 1622 Kentucky Street. Upon investigating he saw the residence at 1310 Kentucky was on fire. Without hesitation Officer Grant went to the scene of the fire. Officer Grant entered the residence and encountered several adults scrambling to save their children as the house was engulfed in the flames of a very aggressive fire. As they exited the home Officer Grant went upstairs to rescue three children that were trapped by the smoke and flames. After carrying two children to safety Officer Grant returned to the residence for the remaining child. Without regard for his own safety he climbed through thick smoke and searing heat grasping the remaining child and carried the child to safety.

The Officer of the Month, as voted on by the Staff of the Michigan City Police Department, and recognized for outstanding duty is Cpl. Mike Elkins, a 25 year veteran and assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division, shift I.
In July a robbery had just occurred outside of the Horizon Bank, 515 Franklin Street. A description and a direction of travel were given out for the suspect. Several officers began to scour the area for the suspect. Cpl. Mike Elkin’s the Shift #1 street supervisor responded to the Robbery Call. Within five minutes of the initial dispatch, Cpl. Elkins located a person matching the description of the alleged robber walking in an alleyway between 8th and 9th and Washington and Wabash Streets. Information was provided by bank officials giving the name of the man that had robbed the 91 year old victim. Cpl. Elkins identified the man he had stopped and placed him under arrest. The victims bank book and United States Currency were found to be in possession of the suspect. The victim also identified the suspect as the man that took his money.
Quick actions by Cpl. Elkins removed a dangerous individual from our streets before he could commit other crimes as the suspect was recently released from prison and is a habitual offender. We commend Cpl. Elkins for his attention to duty.
