Bobcats Born At Zoo!

The Washington Park Zoo is proud to announce the birth of 2 female bobcats born at the Zoo on Friday, May 4th, 2007.

The Bobcat (Lynx rufus) is a wild cat native to North America. It is found mostly in the United States, southern Canada, and northern Mexico. The Bobcat is an adaptable animal that inhabits wooded areas as well as semi-desert, urban, and swampland environments.

In appearance, the Bobcat has characteristic black bars on its forelegs and tail. It also has prominent, pointed ears with short tufts of black hair at the tip.  The Bobcat is twice as large as a house cat and is a carnivorous animal which will hunt anything from insects and small rodents to large deer, but often shows a preference for rabbits and hares. What it hunts will depend on location and habitat, season, and scarcity of prey. The Bobcat breeds from winter into the spring and has a gestation period of about two months.

The parent bobcats are housed in one of the new exhibits that make-up the North American Carnivore Exhibit.  The Michigan City Washington Park Zoo has spent nearly $750,000 in renovations to create the North American Carnivore Exhibit and showcase it as a modern example of animals living in a more natural environment.  Gone are the bars of yesterday in these new exhibits, and instead rugged terrain with windows for the public to view the animals have taken their place.

The Washington Park Zoo hours are from 10:00am to 5:00pm with the entrance gates closing at 4:00pm daily. For more information, call the Washington Park Zoo at 219-873-1510.
