Animals - Animal Feeding

Each year tons of food passes through the Zoo’s diet kitchen. It takes a lot to feed the Zoo's more than 200 hungry mouths each day. Some of the food comes from local grocery stores and other human consumption suppliers. The Zoo also orders some of its food from companies that specialize in making formulated feeds for Zoo animals.

The Washington Park Zoo’s Annual Grocery List

  • 25.6 tons of hay
  • 19.6 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • 2.6 tons of meat, including a dozen rats and mice per day
  • 2.4 tons of grain
  • 3,285 loaves of bread
  • 13,000 crickets
