Zoo Directors Update

A new Zoo is evolving in Michigan City that will meet the performance standards of governmental agencies. Maintain the animal collection in modern spacious, glass fronted naturalistic exhibits. That will become a Northern Indiana Regional Tourist Attraction that our city residents can be proud of.

In 2005, A new Entrance Plaza and Administrative Building, with offices, a conference room and the "Tree House Gift Shop" opened to the public. This new zoo addition won the "Indiana Park & Recreation Association's 2006 Outstanding Facility Award".

January, 2006, a collaborative update assessment and initiative plan for the future of the Washington Park Zoo was completed and implemented. This plan is our road map to improve the quality of the Zoo by renovating and expanding our existing exhibits into new naturalistic exhibits over the next five years. This plan is a living document that is updated from time to time to ensure the continue development and success of the zoo.

In Spring of 2006, a popular zoo attraction will re-open with the completion of the Observation Tower Rehabilitation Project. This City Icon will once again provide zoo visitor's the opportunity to climb its long winding stairs to the highest elevated point in Laporte County and from there be rewarded with spectacular views of Michigan City, lake Michigan and the Chicago Skyline on a clear day.

The construction phase for the New North American Carnivore Exhibit, which houses Grizzly Bears, Mountain Lions and River Otters, will begin in April. Completion date is expect in mid-summer, June or July, also at that same time we are expecting the completion of our new Bobcat Exhibit.
