National Veterans Awareness Ride
Arrival is May 20 at 4PM; departure is May 21 at 7AM. The Wall Gang will be hosting the National Veterans Awareness Ride - traveling north on US Hwy 421 to Washington Park to the Danny Bruce Memorial. There, they will have a 21 gun salute, accompanied by several local Veterans organizations. At 7AM on May 21, they will have a ceremony at the VFW Post 2536 on Earl Road and will then leave to continue their ride to Washington DC. They are asking you support this cause by lining the streets upon arrival and departure, and bringing your flags to show our veterans they are not forgotten. National Senior Health & Fitness Day
The Michigan City Senior Center will sponsor National Senior Health & Fitness Day on Wed., May 28 at the Senior Center, Washington Park. Seniors are encouraged to attend the free event from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to learn ways to integrate low impact exercise and maintain fitness levels.

“The goal of our event is simply to show seniors how keeping fit can be easier than they imagine,” said Tara Miller, director.  “Just a few minutes of physical activity each day can be quite an investment in a healthy lifestyle.”

Highlights of the morning include speaker David Parry, a national coordinator for college football officiating. At 73 years old, Parry continues to coordinate officials for Big Ten football games and has received the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame awards for officiating. Parry will speak at 10:30 a.m.

Nationally-known marathoner and author, Hal Higdon, will kick off the morning with a 5K. Higdon, 76, has authored 34 best-selling books and ran in eight U.S. Olympic trials, winning four world masters championships. Higdon will lead the 5K at 7:30 a.m.

Healthcare providers will be on site to provide health screenings for cholesterol and, blood sugar levels, prostate cancer, blood pressure and more. Additionally, participants will have an opportunity to interact with physicians at exhibits.

Attendees will have the chance to participate in low impact fitness activities. Alembic Artistic Studio will show seniors yoga techniques and low impact tap dancing at 8:30 a.m. ZUMBA Fitness will demonstrate a comfortable Latin dance-like exercise at 9:30 a.m.

The event is free to seniors. Parking is free and door awards will be awarded.

About National Senior Health & Fitness Day

National Senior Health & Fitness Day is always held the last Wednesday in May in support of Older Americans Month and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. It is estimated 150,000 older adults will participate in local fitness activities throughout the country as part of the 15th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day® (NSHFD), the nation’s largest health promotion event for older adults.
