Mock Crash
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office helped to coordinate a mock crash in conjunction with Marquette High School’s Health Fair on March 21, 2017. The crash scenario involved two cars that collided at the intersection of 10th and Manhattan Streets in Michigan City. The emergency drama included three “injured” and one driver “pronounced dead at the scene". Two patients were in “critical condition” with one was being prepped for flight to a trauma center by the Med Flight helicopter that landed on the scene.
Marquette High School students stood watched as firefighters from the Michigan City Fire Department, paramedics from LaPorte County EMS and Police Officers from the Michigan City, LaPorte County and Indiana State Police departments responded to the two-vehicle mock crash. LaPorte County Sheriff’s Captain Michael Kellems narrated the scene for the students while Michigan City Police Lieutenant Jeff Loniewski investigated the crash and “arrested” one of the drivers for being impaired.
The idea for the Mock Crash was initiated by Purdue Northwest nursing students and was an excellent teaching and public education tool for our community's youth. We hope to continue this experience for community groups and schools in the future.
