[ARCHIVED] The LaPorte County Drug Task Force Announces Arrests

On December 8, 2017 the La Porte County Drug Task Force announces the arrests of Todd E. Hunsley (29) of Michigan City and Calvin L. Lowery (28) of Chicago, Illinois, following a lengthy investigation by the unit. The La Porte County Drug Task Force began investigating Hunsley and Lowery, following citizen complaints that the duo were distributing heroin within La Porte County. Information that was obtained by investigators led them to believe that the heroin that Hunsley and Lowery were distributing was resulting in several non-fatal opioid overdoses.

The investigation which was led by Corporal Cisco Rodriguez resulted in evidence, of Hunsley and Lowery’s activities being presented to La Porte County Superior Court #1 Judge Michael Bergerson, by The LaPorte County Prosecutor's Office, where probable cause was found to obtain a search warrant for Hunsley’s residence in the 1700 Block of Elston Street in Michigan City.

The La Porte County Drug Task Force executed the search warrant with the assistance of the Michigan City Police Department SWAT Team on Thursday, December 7th, 2017. Hunsley and Lowery were both taken into custody. Seized items from the residence consisted of: suspected illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia. Evidence was presented to La Porte County Superior Court #1 Judge Michael Bergerson, by The LaPorte County Prosecutor's Office, where probable cause was found to charge Hunsley with three counts of Dealing in Cocaine or a Narcotic Drug as Level 5-Felonies. Lowery was charged with one count of Dealing in Cocaine or a Narcotic Drug as a Level 4-Felony.

This investigation is an excellent example of the La Porte County Drug Task Force following up on citizen complaints and conducting a thorough investigation. These investigations that are one way that law enforcement proactively attempts to rid the neighborhoods of La Porte County of heroin said, Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek.

The La Porte County Drug Task Force was assisted in this investigation by The La Porte County Prosecutors Office, Michigan City Police Department SWAT Team, DEA, and ATF.

Hunsley is currently being held in The La Porte County Jail, on a $15,000 cash only bond, pending his initial appearance on Tuesday December 12th, 2017.

Lowery is currently being held in The La Porte County Jail, on a $15,000 cash only bond, pending his initial appearance on Tuesday December 12th, 2017.
